⚠️ Important Winter Notes

  • Roads via Manali → Rohtang → Kunzum are closed in winter.

  • Only Shimla → Rampur → Kinnaur → Tabo/Kaza route remains open (depending on snowfall).

  • Carry good winter gear, keep buffer days, and check road status (NH-5) before traveling.


6-Day Winter Spiti Itinerary (Shimla → Spiti → Shimla)

(Most practical and popular for winter)

Day 1: Shimla → Sangla / Chitkul (8–9 hrs)

  • Drive via Kufri – Narkanda – Rampur – Karcham.

  • Stay: Sangla (Chitkul may be inaccessible if heavy snow).

  • Things to do:

    • River walk near Baspa

    • Snow viewpoints around Sangla

    • Evening bonfire (weather permitting)


Day 2: Sangla → Kalpa (2–3 hrs)

  • Short scenic drive to Kalpa.

  • Things to do:

    • View of Kinnaur Kailash

    • Roghi Suicide Point

    • Explore Kalpa monastery & village


Day 3: Kalpa → Tabo (6–7 hrs)

  • Drive through Spiti’s winter landscape.

  • Stopovers:

    • Nako Lake

    • Gue Mummy (if road open)

  • In Tabo:

    • Visit Tabo Monastery (1000+ years old)

    • Overnight stay


Day 4: Tabo → Kaza (2–3 hrs)

  • Reach the main town of Spiti.

  • Rest and acclimatize to altitude.

  • Kaza Market: winter cafes, monasteries, local food.


Day 5: Kaza Local Sightseeing (if roads are open)

  • Visit:

    • Key Monastery

    • Kibber Village

    • Hikkim (World’s Highest Post Office) – may close due to snow

    • Langza Buddha Statue

  • ❄️ Winter roads to Hikkim/Langza/Komic may be closed. Key–Kibber usually accessible.


Day 6: Kaza → Kalpa / Reckong Peo (8–9 hrs)

  • Start return journey.

  • Stay in Kalpa or Reckong Peo.


Day 7: Kalpa → Shimla (8–9 hrs)

  • Return to Shimla by evening.



💡 Tips for Winter Spiti

  • Choose a 4×4 or high-ground clearance vehicle (Thar/Scorpio / Jimny).

  • Always carry:

    • Snow chains

    • Thermals, heavy jacket, gloves

    • Oxygen canisters

  • Expect -15°C to -25°C temperatures in Kaza.

  • Only a few hotels/guesthouses operate in winter—book in advance.
